It Rubs the Bronzer on Its Skin

Despite Trump’s Bible-thumping, it’s obvious even to casual observers that he is not a particularly religious person. He touts the Bible, yet appears unfamiliar with scripture when asked directly. It’s well known that he has never regularly attended church, and he has even openly mocked Pope Leo. Case in point: no genuinely devout person would share an image of themselves on social media depicted as Christ.

Donald Trump knew full well that the image he shared was meant to portray him in a God-like way. What he may not have considered is that many religious people don’t appreciate their faith being trivialized with what amounts to a modern-day false idol.

The reality is that Trump likely intended it as a juvenile provocation, designed less to express belief than to generate outrage. And in that sense, it worked. Irritating liberals and his detractors has long been one of his most reliable political instincts.

To me however, Trump cosplaying as Christ was more reminiscent of Buffalo Bill tucking back his penis and wearing the skin of someone who he is not.
